Community Relations

MLKunityweek.com

The Community Relations Office is involved in neighborhood improvement and citizen empowerment. The department also coordinates special projects which are geared to promoting race and ethnic harmony. The office is charged with developing neighborhood action plans for every neighborhood in the City. The office coordinates a Neighborhood Leadership Program, where residents are exposed to the internal workings of such areas as business, education and government. Special projects like the annual International Festival, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. program, Multicultural Conference, and the Urban Youth Corps for summer employment are presented to the community on an annual basis. Community Relations also serve as staff support for the Human Relations Commission, which is appointed by City Council.

Youth Corp Program

The Urban Youth Corps has a strong history of providing areas of beautification throughout the City of Spartanburg. while Corps Members learn practical horticultural and landscaping lessons, a "place-based" philosophy also influences much of the City of Spartanburg's approach to Corps member training. This philosophy holds that the more one knows about a place, the more likely they are to care for it. From the renovated Magnolia Street Train Station and the restoration work at Magnolia Street Cemetery, to the landscaping work gracing the downtown airport and the two mile stretch at Pride Trail, Corps members realize the importance of their beautification efforts to the City of Spartanburg and the State of South Carolina. If you are interested in a fun and challenging job experience with an opportunity to learn relevant life skills, with practical applications, or would just like more information, contact the Community Relations Department.
