Municipal CourtThe Municipal Court for the City of Spartanburg serves as the Judicial arm of the City government. The court is authorized to hear all cases arising under state law and municipal ordinances which occur within the city limits and the penalty thereof is a fine not exceeding $500 (plus mandatory fees) and/or imprisonment not exceeding 30 days, plus certain other cases as authorized by the Legislature. This includes both criminal and traffic cases, as well as livability issues. The Municipal Court has no civil jurisdiction. Types of Cases HandledViolations of state laws and municipal ordinances heard in the Municipal Court are generally in three categories: Criminal, Traffic, & Livability. Criminal violations include criminal domestic violence, larceny, simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, shoplifting, public disorderly conduct, plus many other offenses. Traffic violations include DUS, DUI, speeding, reckless driving, failure to yield right of way, parking, plus many other offenses. Livability violations include safety issues such as fire code, housing code, and building code violations, as well as quality-of-life issues such as dog restraint, derelict vehicles, garbage and trash control, littering, accumulation of weeds, brush and debris, plus many other offenses.
