New location, start time intended to reinvigorate Music on Main

Music on Main, the popular every-Thursday night event that runs April-August, will have a new location and time for its 20th season. Starting with this season’s first concert on April 4, Music on Main will be held just below Morgan Square in the grassy area between the iconic Downtown Clock Tower, Broad Street, and the Herald-Journal offices. The only street closure will be a small portion of Spring Street.

The new location will provide people with easier access to the majority of downtown’s restaurants, bars and other nightspots. With approximately 20 restaurants and bars within two blocks of the new location, the City anticipates it will have a positive economic impact on these businesses. In addition to restaurants on Morgan Square, the new location will allow people to easily get to the event from the Magnolia Street parking garage, as well as easily access RJ Rockers Brewery (which hosts a popular Tour and Taste event every Thursday night), the Showroom and other businesses and attractions just west of the Square.

In addition, Music on Main will now be from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Previously, the event was held from 6 to 9 p.m. The City hopes the earlier starting time will help to entice more people who work downtown to attend.

“Music on Main has consistently attracted hundreds of people,” said Special Events & Festivals Manager Mandy Merck. “Depending on the weather and the week, this event has been known to draw more than 1,000 people. After nearly 20 years, we really felt like it was time to make some changes that we feel have the potential to breathe new life into the event and better link it to the hub of activity in and around Morgan Square.”
