Recycling Program Improvements
Curbside pickup now includes glass, all plastics
The City of Spartanburg announced today residents soon will be able to toss glass and higher-numbered plastics into their blue recycling rollcarts along with the rest of their recycling. The addition of glass and all plastics (Numbers 1 through 7) makes the City’s “single-stream” recycling program even more convenient to use – instead of separating different materials, everything from paper to aluminum to steel cans to all plastics and now glass can be put into the blue rollcart and placed at the curb for pickup every other Monday.
With the change, the City of Spartanburg becomes the only municipality in the Upstate to collect all forms of recyclables in a “fee-free” single-stream rollcart.
“Adding glass and all plastics to our single-stream recycling program is something residents have wanted for a long time,” said Spartanburg Mayor Junie White. “This improvement makes the City Recycling Program a model for other cities. It is a great service for our residents and another reason why living in the City of Spartanburg is such an attractive choice.”
The City also announced that some residents will see their recycling pickup day changed. Previously, the City collected all curbside recycling on the first and third Mondays of the month. Starting on Monday, May 14, half the City will be serviced on the first and third Mondays, with the other half collected on the second and fourth Mondays.
Residents will be informed of the new pickup schedule through new stickers placed on their rollcarts and informational magnets placed on their front door by city workers, but in general terms, residents who live east of Pine Street and north of Main Street will have their recycling collected on the second and fourth Monday of the month, while residents who live west of Pine Street and south of Main Street will have their recycling collected on the first and third Monday of the month.
A map showing the different collection zones is available at www.spartanburgrecycling.com.
The new schedule will roll out as follows:
n Monday, May 7: All City recycling collected.
n Monday, May 14: Residents who live east of Pine Street and north of Main Street will have their recycling collected. (The transition will result in this one-time instance of back-to-back recycling pickup weeks for these residents.)
n Monday, May 21: Residents who live west of Pine Street and south of Main Street will have their recycling collected, and continuing with the new alternating weekly schedule hereafter.
The new schedule will allow for more efficient use of staffing and resources as the City collects an increasing amount of recycling. The City also is encouraging residents who currently do not recycle to start by requesting a cart by calling (864) 596-3690. Residents who begin recycling for the first time will be entered into a drawing for a free Kindle, which is being provided by Sonoco, the City’s recycling vendor. Residents must request a cart by May 18 to be eligible for the drawing.
