Skating on the Square To Return
Second season opens Friday, Nov. 15; runs through Jan. 5
Skating on the Square, one of the most well-received special events in City history, will return for a second season on Morgan Square. City officials and the event’s primary sponsor agreed to bring back the event after a first season that saw more than 14,000 people skate over the course of the seven weeks the downtown ice rink was open.
Indeed, response to Skating on the Square was overwhelming, with dozens of residents requesting the City keep the rink open longer as the closing date in early January neared. The event also proved to be a significant driver of economic activity downtown, as skaters and their families frequented restaurants and other businesses.
“From providing a healthy outdoor activity during some of our colder months, to adding to the spirit of the holiday season, to increasing economic activity downtown, Skating on the Square checked off every box we hoped it would in its first year,” said Mandy Merck, the City of Spartanburg’s Special Events & Festivals Manager. “At the same time, building and then operating an outdoor ice skating rink is not an inexpensive endeavor, and we are fortunate to have a remarkable sponsor that has made Skating on the Square feasible.”
The City will release additional information about sponsorship opportunities in the coming weeks. People should also be sure to check www.skatingonthesquare.com and the event’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/SpartanburgsSkatingontheSquare) for news and updates on the 2013-2014 season.
“We learned a lot from our first year, and we plan to make the second season even more fun and exciting,” Merck said. “Our goal is to make this event a traditional part of the holidays for local families, and we will be focused on creating an experience that keeps people coming back to Downtown Spartanburg all season long.”
