West Main Streetscape

Upgrades scheduled for October completion

The much-anticipated West Main Street Improvement Project will start on Monday, August 20, 2012. This multi-faceted streetscape project will include resurfacing West Main Street between Daniel Morgan Avenue and West St. John Street, replacing gutters, adding bike lanes in each direction, reducing lanes for automobiles from two to one in each direction, replacing the existing concrete sidewalks with wider, brick-paver sidewalks, and adding street lights, trees and other new landscaping.

The $325,000 project is expected to be completed in early October. Greenville-based Raby Construction was awarded the contract for the project following a competitive bid process.

West Main Street will remain open during the work, but drivers should expect construction-related delays. Businesses along that stretch of West Main Street – including Event Rentals, Cohen’s Closeouts, Main Street Pub, RJ Rockers Brewing Co., and Cribb’s Kitchen – will remain open throughout the construction and vehicles will have access to their parking lots. However, drivers hoping to avoid construction-related delays in that area are encouraged to use St. John Street as a detour.
