Citizen's Academy
Whether you're interested in a career as a police officer or firefighter, or you are a local resident interested in learning about how the Spartanburg Police Department or Fire Department operates, the Citizen's Academy is a great resource and a wonderful experience offered free of charge to area residents. The Academy allows citizens to express their concerns, ask meaningful questions, and gain a better understanding of some of the decisions made by public safety professionals.
Class participants learn about the hiring process for Spartanburg Police Department and Fire Department employees, interact with police officers and firefighters, and get a tour of the Spartanburg County Courthouse and 911 facilities. Attendees also get to drive an actual Police Department cruiser with an instructor on a closed course and may participate in up to three ride-alongs with police officers.
Learning
In addition to learning about all aspects of local police work, participants in the class get an overview of the workings of the local court system and gain an understanding of the importance of police and community partnerships in Spartanburg. Class participants can expect to come away from the class more aware of the challenges in our City, while also gaining a better understanding of the men and women who serve and protect the citizens who call it home.
The 12-week course is held twice per year in the Spring and Fall, and classes meet each Monday between 6:30 and 8:30 pm. Participants must be willing to submit to a background check, must have a valid driver's license, and must normally be at least 18 years old, though a waiver can be obtained with permission from a parent.
