What is Fair Housing
Fair housing means all people have equal access to the housing of their choice that they can afford. Fair housing laws ensure this equal access. Fair housing laws apply to the sale or rental of nearly all forms of residences, including apartments, houses, mobile homes, nursing homes, homeless shelters, and even vacant lots to be developed for housing. The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits the denial of housing to a person based on the person's race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status, or disability.

Our Mission
The Community Services Department is dedicated to educating and supporting the people of Spartanburg in knowing the rights and the laws that govern the people of South Carolina. There have been wrongful evictions, non-responsive repair requests, unsafe conditions, discriminatory renting and lending, and other unwarranted actions that have plagued a multitude of people. Too many of us are not prepared when we are in a position to make tough decisions involving our needs for shelter and well-being. This program has been implemented to try to assist anyone who is being treated unfairly with respect to the housing.
