Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan

South Carolina's First Bicycle-Friendly Community

City leaders have made creating bicycle infrastructure, increased bicycle facilities, and education investments a priority. Bicycle lane mileage has quadrupled and the number of bicycle racks has increased fivefold since the Bike Town Initiative. In 2011, Spartanburg created B-Cycle the first bike-sharing program in the Southeast. The City also is the host of the Assault on Mount Mitchell and the annual Spartanburg Classic Criterium, held every May downtown.

As a result, the City was named the state's first Bicycle Friendly Community in 2007 and again in 2012. The BFC award inspired the development of a new county and citywide Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan.
