The New Stewart Park

Monday, August 27

Grand opening set for Saturday, Sept. 8

The grand opening of the new Edward C. Stewart Park has been set for Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at 10 a.m. The grand opening event will include remarks from city and neighborhood leaders, music, food, and games.

Stewart Park has long been a center of community life in the City’s Highland neighborhood, but had fallen into disrepair in the years before the City worked out an agreement with the County to retake control over City parks. After giving preliminary approval to renovating Stewart Park in 2007, City Council gave the $1.7 million project the final go-ahead lastyear, and ground was broken in August 2011.

The new Stewart Park’s 8-plus acres will include a multi-purpose athletic field installed with a state-of-the-art irrigationsystem, basketball courts, walking trails, a sprayground, playground equipment, picnic shelter, and parking, setting a new standard for multi-use neighborhood parks in Spartanburg.

“Stewart Park represents the vision of a community and the commitment of City Council to making great quality of life amenities and programs available to our residents,” said Mitch Kennedy, City Community Services Director. “This is going to be a great day not only for Highland, but for the entire City. Stewart Park will serve as a tremendous place for people from all over Spartanburg to play and enjoy precious time with family and friends.”
